Essaouira

Essaouira formerly known as Mogador, in Berber language, is 190 km from Marrakech.
In the heart of a dense forest of 600 hectares of Argan trees, protected by a natural sand dune, it is overlooking a 4 km beach on the Atlantic Ocean and it is the most active fishermen port in Morocco. Its Medina (old town) is a UNESCO World Heritage listed city.

Famous for its annual Gnaoua music Festival, that normally takes place in June, it is an attraction for millions of people and international artists. Essaouira is considered as the bohemian destination in Morocco and the most beautiful coastal city, with its white houses and brilliant blue windows.

During the nights, plenty of restaurants and venues are hosting every kind of live music: from African percussions to reggae, funky, jazz and rock music. Anyway, Essaouira is not only music. In fact, there are a lot of painters workshops, showing their unique naïf style paintings .

Its walls with big ramparts, powerful fortifications overlooking the Ocean and equipped with emblazoned guns (the Skala), the linearity and width of its main streets are very unusual for a Muslim city. The relaxing and mysterious atmosphere is unique all over Morocco.
